Strathmore is designed to be temporary, refuge housing for children age 0-15 over a period up to 90 days. There are several in their twenties and the longest has been there over 10 years. This is the only facility of its kind for the Jamaican parishes of St. Catherine and Clarendon. The facility can house up to 35. Strathmore provides shelter, educational services, food, counseling and medical attention for children often delivered by the police who get in trouble with the law, are abused or neglected. The home is run by Rev. Gilbert Leigh, a Jamaican-born pastor in Chicago. His Caribbean Children’s Fund is an American non-profit organization that has supported Strathmore since 2000. The next-door "Mission House" is available for missionary activities, dining and housing space. |

Organized classes, activities, Bible school are a fantastic bonus for the children.
Childrens Fair Movie Nights are great! Bring your equipment to show the movies.
Field trips are a hit for these children that rarely leave the home.
Dental Team The children do not have regular access to a dentist, so teaching basic care, oral hygiene supplies and simple checkups are useful.
Medical Team The children do have access to a doctor and hospital for emergencies, however, they do not have regular checkups or care. Vision and developmental screening would be useful.
Teacher Training Inservices for the teacher and aid are helpful. They teach 30 children age 5-15 in the same room-5 & 6 year olds on one side with one and 7-15 year olds on the other. Teacher aides could take small groups of children for activities and lessons.
Teacher Training The caregiver staff needs training in the following areas: special needs children, stimulating programs, discipline, basic child development. Demonstrating examples of these areas is most effective.

Carpentry The roof to the main building that houses the children has leaks. A skilled team that could repair these problems is of greatest need.
Low Skilled Heavy Construction They are expanding the classroom significantly. The walls are up. A roof (wood rafters & zinc metal sheeting) needs to be installed. The floor needs to be poured.
Painting The rooms inside need to be painted with something durable, to resist the wear & tear of so many children! The outside playground area is also is need of repainting.
Low Skilled Heavy Construction The Home wants to build a new building - either a dormatory or kitchen/bathrooms/washroom. At this point, nothing has been started. It will consist of concrete, steel, block with concrete floor and wood rafter/metal sheeting roof.
Carpentry The leadership wants to construct a new playground for the children.
